ReplyDeleteTwo horse movies not on your list: Lonely are the Brave: Kirk Douglas plays a throw back cowboy running from a police force buttressed by jeeps and helicopters trying to beat them to Mexico on his horse. One of Kirk's personal favorites. And Brady's Escape: A Wyoming WWII fighter pilot is shot down over Europe and taken in by Hungarian cowboys. Stars John Savage and the Black Stallion''s Kelly Reno.
ReplyDeleteThe Adventures of Champion the Wonder Horse.
ReplyDeleteIts a 6 disk set, came on TV in 1955.
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0047703/
Thanks for the additional horse movie info. I will add them to the list.
ReplyDeleteYour missing my favorite horse movie...a leap of faith
ReplyDelete"The Winter Stallion" is missing... Also can't remember the name of the movie, but it was above the Lippazaners Stallions in Austria when they had to be moved because of WWII.... Another TV series that is missing is "Mr Ed" and "Fury"....
ReplyDeleteSee #20 for the Austrian stallions movie.
DeleteInternational Velvet 1982-ish?? It isn't available on Netflix, sadly.
ReplyDeleteI see Dreamer on the top 10 but not in this list of 127??
ReplyDeleteYou missed "Man From Snowy River" - my personal favorite. Disney does it best.
ReplyDeleteWarhorse. Best made horse movie I have ever seen. It's absolutely amazing.
ReplyDeleteI was so afraid to watch this because of the abuse, so I read the book first and asked people exactly what parts would be hard to watch. I finally went to see it, and absolutely LOVED it. I was prepared for the sad parts and tho still hard, at least I wasn't shocked into panic. After seeing it twice, I made sure to see the stage version which was just incredible.
DeleteI'll take one of each, please.
ReplyDeleteYou missed, " In Pursuit of Honor " with Don Johnson as a cavalry man ordered to shoot all he remaining cavalry horses. Instead he "liberated" them all the way from Texas to across the Canadian border. GREAT MOVIE!!!
ReplyDeleteYou also missed an old Audie Murphy movie called Tumbleweed, Also a great horse movie about an innocent man accused of murder, a chase thru the desert on a little horse called Tumbleweed that saves his life.
You should add Derby also.
ReplyDeletePhar Lap is wonderfull
ReplyDeleteYou are totally missing Heartland (Canadian TV Show).
ReplyDeletehttp://www.imdb.com/title/tt1094229
AGREED! BEST SHOW E.V.E.R!!! If you love horses you HAVE to watch this series!
DeleteLove that show, wish I could find season 5 online! Came here to find a new horse show until Heartland's next two seasons are available on Netflix.
DeleteHeartland's awesome love it, can't believes it's in its 8th season. I would recommend to watch Wildfire, it's about a girl who was in a juvenile prison, where she learns to ride on an ex race horse called wildfire, it also has romance and drama which makes it even better, personally if you love heartland you will love this.
DeleteThe best tv show horse related, love it, watching it for 4th time over.
DeleteOh ya!!!! I found my peeps! :)
DeleteThanks for all the great comments. I have added all of the missing horse movies and TV shows. A few just have a different official name. Thanks again!
ReplyDeleteMichelle (HorseAndPony)
Michelle, I can remember the name of the show/movie. Its about a girl that had a red horse and tried to run barrels on it but the horse wouldn't do it but she tried anyway. A man(dad, grandpaw, Old Man) keep telling her to try the little grey Pony and she finially tried and she started winning on it. Have you ever heard of it. I have been looking for it for days. Its from the 70's, 80's. Thanks in advance.
DeleteHi all,
ReplyDeleteam looking for the name of a horse film and hoping you can help me. I've always thought it was called 'ponies in brooklyn' it was a about a run down stables in a city that was threatened with closure. A group of small children kidnapped a white pony and took it home with them. In the end the stables were shut and the horses moved to a big pasture.
It was made in the 1970s/very early 80s and was VERY much of the time
Hope someone can help!
Thanks x
Hi,
DeleteNot sure if this is what you're looking for but take a look at The Littlest Horse Thieves.
Michelle(HorseAndPony)
Okay not necessarily a horse movie but should on your list LEGEND with tom cruse and the UNICORNS!!!
ReplyDelete:) I think this will need to be on a different list.
DeleteAre you serious? How can you include The Last Unicorn & Nico the Unicorn in this list & not Legend? Have you even scene Legend?
DeleteOkay, Legend had been added at #150. I guess this is one I need to watch.
DeleteWhat about the TV series Wildfire on ABC family I think. I loved that TV series...for all its equestrian teenage hormonal melodrama. :-)
ReplyDeleteThanks! Just added it! My daughter is at the perfect age for this. :) It has been added to our must watch list.
DeleteWe recently watched Wildfire and loved it!
Deleteyou missed Adventures of the Black Stallion! TV series loosly based on the Black Stallion books, stars Mickey Rooney. :) and don't forget Mr. Ed, one of the most famous talking horse TV series of all time..odd it isn't on here. o.o
ReplyDeleteMr. Ed is #130 but I did miss the Black Stallion TV Series. Thanks, will add it now.
ReplyDeleteThe World of Horses, Seasons 1 & 2
ReplyDeleteHi,
DeleteI'm mot really sure what this is. I found something but it doesn't have any information. It will be added as #140. If you think it should link to something different let me know.
Thanks,
Michelle

ReplyDeleteHi! This is a great list and I have one to add. 1969's Run Wild Run Free. Starring Mark Lester and John Mills and the most etherially beautuful white colt. Lush misty cinematography. It can be hard to find but certainly worth it.
ReplyDeleteThanks! It has been added.
DeleteHi,
ReplyDeletePlease add Flicka 3 to your list
Thanks! It has been added.
DeleteHi,
ReplyDeleteAny equine related movies expected in 2012 and 2013?
Hi,
DeleteThanks for visiting. Wild Horse, Wild Ride will be released in a few days. I will add a link to the bottom of the movie list above. Also, the Mine That Bird movie might be released next year. Not sure if there are any others.
Mr. ed is my fav!!!!!! I could watch it everyday!
ReplyDeleteWhat? You've left off Dark Victory -- the only reason that baby didn't win an oscar is that it had the misfortune to come out the same year as Gone w/ the Wind and Wizard of Oz, sigh.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the info. Never heard of it. Just checked it out but still not sure it would be considered a horse movie. I guess I need to watch it.
DeleteHi Michelle
ReplyDeleteI came across your site and think it's wonderful! You've definitely got items here I've never seen before. It will be a regular stop from now on. I was wondering if you ever review books (fiction)?
Thanks for visiting. I would review but I don't have a lot of time at the moment. I checked out your site and book. If you would like to submit a write-up, I would be happy to post it and help spread the word. I will contact you through your blogger account.
DeleteWould Francis the Talking Mule count as a horse movie? It was a series in the 40's I think.
ReplyDeleteWas The Return to Snowy River on the list?
ReplyDeleteHow about the Horse Whisperer and The Last Unicorn?
ReplyDeleteHow about Roy Rogers, Gene Autry, and American Black Beauty
ReplyDeleteHi Jill D - For some reason I'm not able to reply to comments. Anyhow, thanks for visiting and the suggestions. I added American Black Beauty, The Last Unicorn and Francis the Talking Mule. The others were there or I'm just not considering them horse or equine(for the mules). ~Michelle
ReplyDeleteCaitlin's Way is also a great television show, Caitlin Seeger is a troubled teenager. She was orphaned at age 8 and has been shuffled from one foster home to another ever since. She was forced to grow up fast and to learn how to survive on the streets of Philadelphia. After running afoul of the law one time too many, she is given the choice between jail and going to live with relatives on a ranch in Montana. Upon arriving in Montana, the street-hardened young girl experiences the ultimate culture shock.
ReplyDeleteThanks for visiting! Never watched this but found some info on IMDb. I didn't find anything horse related except that she moved to a ranch and her aunt is a vet. Not sure if this would be considered a horse show. Is there any more info? Dose she ride?
DeleteYeah, the only reason Caitlin ends up staying on the ranch instead of just grabbing her gear and running off again is because of a wild horse that has been injured that she defends when the father of the family she's staying with wants to put it down because it might be dangerous. She ends up keeping the horse and forming a strong bond with it.
DeleteThere is one horse show it is called HEARTLAND.
ReplyDeleteHi ~ Got it. It's number 128. Thanks for visiting!
DeleteThere is a movie from the 50's or so called 'April Love' thats about a teenager a horse, and sulky racing.... really great film!!
ReplyDeleteThanks for the info. Just added it as #148. Thanks for visiting!
DeleteHey all. I hope someone can help me. I was a young girl when I watched this film. Ive been looking on every site humanly possible and am just about losing hope. The key thing I remember about it was that A girl and an American indian boy took a wild horse away from a stables because the owner was an ass to it. They took the horse into what looked like a canyon and trained it. The horse was black with a diamond on the bridge of its nose. When there location was blown they took it back to the stables and covered its nose with boot polish. I think it was a hallmark film but ive looked and cant find it. The key thing that stuck in my mind was the boot polish bit. I think they were training it to do barrel racing. All I know is that it looked like it was filmed in the 90's no earlier. I really hope someone will put me out of my misery. I've been searching for it for 4 years and still no luck. thanks
ReplyDeleteHi,
DeleteI'm not sure but maybe someone else will know and comment.
Thanks for visiting!
Michelle
I Tink i know that movie! Its called Coyote summer if im thinking of the same one :)
DeleteHey, I'm trying to find a t.v program about horse racing. I think it was on BBC1 or itv. Around 2006 maybe. Thanks
ReplyDeleteHi,
DeleteSorry for the delayed response but I'm not sure about this program. Maybe someone will stop by and have an answer for you.
Was it about about an Irish race horse if so it was a series that only did one season called Rough Diamond. Be great to track it down if you can.
DeleteI'm also looking for a TV series that was on in the UK in the 1990's. It was about a Blackfoot Indian boy who go through foster homes and was eventually sent back to the Rez and taken in by his Grandfather and given a wild mustang to start and train for an endurance race.
The horse gets stolen and ends up at a rodeo but the boy gets it back. I have the book its title is Winners apparently the book was titled in the UK as Jordy in the late 1980's. From what I can remember of the filming etc it was filmed around that 80 / 90's.
Great story but Ive been looking for the TV series / film for years, I'm not sure if the series was shown elsewhere or what title it was shown under. I only saw part of it due to only being in the UK for a short time.
If its the TV series I'm thinking of it's called Rough Diamond and was set in Ireland. I think the BBC ran the series but never ran the 2nd series.
DeleteI'm also looking for a tv series shown in the UK about a Native American boy who lands up back on the rez with his Grandfather. To help him his grandfather gets him a wild prairie horse, which they gentle n trains the wild horse and competes in an endurance race. The horse gets stolen n he eventually finds it at a rodeo.
Ive got the book which was published in the late 80's under 2 titles , Jordy in the UK and Winners in Canada and the US. I think it was aired in the UK during the mid to late 90's. If anyone has an idea of the title it was aired under and even a link Id really appreciate it as Ive bee searching for years for it.
HI,
DeleteI THINK U MIGHT BE LOOKING FOR HEARTLAND. IT RUNS ON BBC AND IS AN AMAZING HORSE TV SHOW.

ReplyDeleteDidn't see Gypsy Colt from back in the late 50's. The Byrd Theater in Richmond had summer matinees and showed a lot of horse movies. Will try to think of some of the names. The newest release is Barbie & Her Sisters in a Pony Tale (mine are on their way for Christmas gifts). My granddaughters love the Barbie moveies.
ReplyDeleteThanks for visiting! Gypsy Colt is number 71. I'll add the Barbie movie now. Thanks again. ~Michelle
DeleteTwenty-five or thirty years ago, there was made-for-TV movie that depicted the first Native American on the central plains to ever see a horse. It was one of those set loose by the Spanish. He was amazed, followed it, and eventually was able to climb on its back and be taken for a wild ride. He reacted as if he had taken flight.
ReplyDeleteI can't remember the name of the film but have wanted to get a copy, if available, for a long time. I think the name of the movie may have had something to with the notion of flying, or learning to fly.
Anybody else recall this?
Thanks for visiting! Not sure about that movie. Maybe someone will stop by and have some info.
DeleteMy husband is also very keen to get hold of this movie. We saw it in the late 1970s at Pinewood Cinema in Melbourne along with Picnic At Hang
Deleteing Rock. He thinks it was a one word title and there was virtually no dialogue in it. It was excellent!
you can add all roads lead home
ReplyDeleteIt has been added as #157. Thanks for visiting!
DeleteI am trying to remember the name of a TV movie made not too long ago ~ it is about a gal that jumps and has a tragic accident, paralyzing her and seriously injures her horse. She goes thru physical therapy, befriends a gal and gets back on her horse and saves her friend from suicide getting her on a horse as well. Does anyone know this movie?
ReplyDeleteThanks for visiting! Not sure about that movie. Maybe someone will stop by and have some info.

Deletei don't see a leap of faith on this list
ReplyDeleteSorry for the delayed response. Leap of Faith is #26 titled ~ Breaking Free (A Leap of Faith) (1995). Thanks for visiting!
DeleteI saw this movie on Animal Planet sometime in the early 2000's. I'm hoping someone here has seen it and can tell me the name. The main characters are a teenage girl with long brown hair and glasses and a teenage boy that is a riding instructor. The boy was trainning a rich girl for a big show and she ended up leaving to go to another trainer after not getting her way. So the boy ends up training another girl, who is shy and quiet instead. I believe she rode a beautiful Andalusian. She has never been around horses and practices hard for the show. She has to show and win points to qualify to show in the championships as the first rider was qualified but not the new girl. The horse also had enough points for the championships. The class was for a western equitation class I believe. Unfortunatly, I don't remember much else becuase it was been so long. If this sounds formiliar, please let me know. Thanks.
ReplyDeleteI am looking for this too!
DeleteI have been looking for this movie too. For some reason I thought it originally came out earlier than the 2000's.
DeleteHello,
ReplyDeleteI hope someone can help. I am looking for the name of a movie about an Indian boy who befriends an injured Calvary horse and nurses him back to heath just to get caught riding it by a Calvary soldier and the boy attempts to evade the Calvary. I think it was made in the 50's or early 60's. Its been a long time since I've seen it so the details might be off.
Hi all, there is two old Disney movies not on the list The tattooed police horse and Escape from the dark, not sure if Riders and The man who made husbands Jealous should be on the list both are based on Jilly cooper's books. Also back in the late 60s early 70s not sure when there was a TV series about Lipizzaner 's,I think it was called White horses or White stallions, I think it was dubbed, there was also a theme song on record.Talking of TV series do you have Follyfoot on the list
ReplyDeleteSorry for the delayed reply. Just added The Tattooed Police Horse #161, Riders #162 and Follyfoot #163. I couldn't find Escape from the Dark and I couldn't find the horse connection with The Man Who Made Husbands Jealous. Thanks for all the info. ~Michelle

DeleteThere was I movie I saw, possibly in the fifties, titled 'Wildfire, Wild Stallion of the Rockies' about the adventures of a sorrel coloured horse. Loved it but can't find any record of it anywhere.

ReplyDeleteYou forgot the move Wild Horse Hank is the adventure of a brave young girl named Hank (Linda Blair) who is a dedicated cowgirl to saving a herd of wild mustangs from poachers. Hank is an independent girl in the film who has been around horses all her life. One day while out riding she happens upon some horse hunters who are rounding up a herd of mustangs to sell for pet food.[1]
ReplyDeleteHank follows the hunters into town and releases the caged horses. If Hank is to save these wild animals, they must reach the protection of federal land. But the nearest such area lies across a desert, through a river and over a mountain range some 150 miles away
Looking for a movie nearly sure it was called 'Wildfire, Wild Stallion of the Rockies' about a sorrel coloured horse which gets separated from its owner. Can't remember much more but would have been fifties or sixties. It was also a romance. I think Wildfire was found at the end performing in a circus and the lost lovers find each other again. Can't find any record of this movie. Can anyone help?
ReplyDeleteOur Wild Hearts 2013
ReplyDelete"Cowgirls 'N Angels," with Bailee Madison and James Cromwell.
ReplyDeleteHi, thank you for this list.
ReplyDeleteI remember (and my memory can be completely unreliable) a TV show or a TV special or a Disney TV special aired sometime during the 70's; maybe '75- '77.
A boy had a horse or a pony and then the pony/horse got wings.
Does anyone remember this?
There are two Tv series that are not on this list.
ReplyDeleteThe first is called STAR RUNNER about a trotter and the 2nd one is a BBC series called TRAINER.
I would live to get hold of both of these series.
You have displayed a very different & unique list of must see movies of all time. I really like you idea of listing these movies aside from typical kind of movies. Well it is a great collection and of course very helpful for my project too. Thank you my friend.
ReplyDeleteI saw a mention in the comments of “The Adventures of the Black Stallion”, a Canadian TV series aired in the 90s. This is the series that made me fall in love with horses.
ReplyDelete90s sitcom list

ReplyDeleteI watched "Run for the Roses" (#115) when I was little...and...sadly...never again.
ReplyDeleteI live in germany and here the name of the movie was/is "Juanitos big friend".
Did someone know where I can get this movie? I couldn't find it.

ReplyDeleteHi!
ReplyDeleteSo I had a question since this is the place for horse movies/shows. I remember watching a movie or show that had horses in it, and in it a girl was riding a horse (obvious) and had thrown her from the horse because it was scared of a noise or something.
She had gotten hurt and the horse had ran home and got help essentially. For the life of me I can't remember what it's called...help?
what is the name of the movie that was narrated by a woman that had chased a wild black horse and was just watching him in the wild , please if u know the name of the movie and thanks in advance.
ReplyDeleteNew film...."A Horse Called Bear" will be out about mid 2015
ReplyDeleteKeep up the brilliant work, this is a great place to see what's out there and what I am missing and hope to be able to find on sale somewhere, because I can't access Netflix.
#161 The Tattooed Police Horse" by Disney won't be available anywhere unfortunately, it was in Disney Vaults when it was flooded out. Many old films were lost.
I dont have google, openid etc so I am going anonymous.
ReplyDeleteI am Barbara from Queensland Australia.
There is a film you do not have on your list and IMDB doesn't list it either.
Here are the details...

ReplyDeleteNice Blog
ReplyDeleteI am searching desperately for a movie I saw probably in the 60's on tv. It was about the spanish coming to the new world. It begins with a scene where a tacked up horse escapes (from a raft? or something) and swims through the surf to shore. A native american boy finds him, he has never seen a horse before. The movie had no dialogue at all and played again the same evening so I watched it twice and I have never met another person who has ever heard of it. At the time it was critically acclaimed for it's beauty and the fact that it had no dialogue Please help.
ReplyDeleteNice, stallion deserves on number 1 spot :D thanks for this post.
ReplyDeleteI've seen most of them and will watch them all. But looking for a couple on dressage I've seen saving Winston, and the long shot. I recommend them for sure but still looking for more
ReplyDeleteHello, Michelle!!!
ReplyDeleteNice to meet you! :)
My name is Michael and I'm from Lima, Peru!
I was looking for a TV series for kids/teens with the horse theme that was produced in the 90's and I came across your blog! You have done a great job! :) Ok, I don't remember too much about the series but here's what I know:
It was aired in 1997
It was aired on Fox Kids Latin America
The Spanish title was "Lindetree, escuela de equitación". It was about a girl who rode horses in a horse riding school.
That's all I remember! I hope you can help me, hehe. :)
Greetings from Lima, Peru!

ReplyDeleteI've been looking for a film that ends with a moustached man who's been chasing a wild black horse and he finally catches up with it, mounts it and starts galloping through a river. I think the man was Sam Elliot or a look a like. I saw it sometime in the 1980s I think. Any ideas?
ReplyDeleteI've been trying to rediscover a movie I saw, I believe, in the seventies about an Indian (arapaho?)on an appaloosa that did the most gracious beautiful riding I've ever seen at high speed over wooded ridges and down through meadows in Colorado maybe.
