10 ~ Running Free (1999)

Running Free is an excellent movie about a hard luck horse named lucky.  It follows the life of a new born colt and the many hardships it suffers.  I'm not sure why bit it was given a G rating.  There are many heartbreaking scenes and i wouldn't recommend this movie for young or overly sensitive children.  My daughter and I cried almost the entire movie bit it has a very happy ending.  You might even find yourself cheering for Lucky.

9 ~ Seabiscuit (2003)

The number 9 top horse movie ~ Rated PG-13

This is a great horse racing movie about a feisty little race horse with a lot of heart.  In addition to loving Seabiscuit , The American history included was very interesting and beautifully filmed.  This horse movie is rated PG-13 and not appropriate for the littlest horse lovers.

8 ~ Dreamer: Inspired By A True Story (2005)

Dreamer is another great horse racing movie.  This story and cast are perfection.  It's beautifully filmed, heartwarming movie with a very happy ending.  Dreamer is rated PG due to a few tragic scenes.  It is an excellent family movie but recommended for ages 6 and older.

7 ~ Hidalgo (2004)

Hidalgo is an exciting horse movie about a mustang, Hidalgo and his owner, Frank T. Hopkins.  They have many adventures, including competing in a 3,000 mile horse race in the Arabian desert.  It's based on a true story but much of the movie strays from the facts.  So, if you are just looking for an amazing horse movie it will not matter.

6 ~ The Horse Whisperer (1998)

The Horse Whisperer has an amazing cast consisting of Robert Redford, who was also the director, Kristin Scott Thomas, Scarlette Johannson, Sam Neill and Diane Wiest.  Need I say more.  While this movie ends on a positive note, it is very sad and a definite tear jerker.  It contains many adult situations and tragic scenes that are not appropriate for young children.  So, why would anyone want to watch this movie?  Well, it's an honest, inspiring, touching and beautifully filmed horse movie.  It has a power that will make you want to watch it again and again.

5 ~ Secretariat - The Impossible True Story (2010)

On October 8, 2010, Walt Disney Pictures released a new horse movie, Secretariat , The Impossible True Story.  My family and I went to see it on opening day.  It instantly became one of our favorites and was amazing enough to make my top 10 list.

It was beautifully filmed and the cast was perfect  Best of all, it was such a great story that it didn't need tragedy or abuse to make it interesting.

4 ~ Black Beauty (1994)

The number 4 top horse movie ~ Rated G

This is another beautifully filmed movie with an amazing horse story.  Black Beauty is told from the horses perspective and relates the happy, sad and cruel life experiences that many horses encounter.  This horse movie will touch your heart from beginning to end.

Black Beauty is rated G but there are many very sad and heart wrenching scenes.  I wouldn't recommend this horse movie for very young or sensitive children.

3 ~ National Velvet (1944)

National Velvet is an oldie but goodie.  It's another amazing horse story and perfect for the entire family.  The cast is top notch and can do no wrong.  Mickey Rooney, Elizabeth Taylor, Donald Crisp, Anne Revere and Angela Lansbury.  This movie is a heartwarming combination of innocence and a love for horses that makes all dreams come ture.  I have loved this movie since I was a young girl and my daughter fell in love with it when she was only five.  We have watched this movie countless times and never grow tired of it.  You won't want to miss this great family classic.

2 ~ War Horse (2011)

The number 2 top horse movie ~ Rated PG-13

War Horse is a wonderful love story about a boy and his horse.  It's full of emotion and will have you laughing one minute and crying the next.  The movie gets a bit rough at times but is appropriately rated PG-13.  This is a must watch movie for all horse lovers.

The Black Stallion is a timeless classic that tells of a love story between a boy and horse.  This horse movie is many things, happy, sad, thrilling, suspenseful and as if that wasn't enough, the scenery is breathtaking and the action, heart stopping.  It is a family favorite at our house.  Everyone loves it from the kids to the grandparents.  This is a movie that should not be missed.
