Ghost Horse Stories for Halloween and All Year Long
When my daughter was younger, we loved a good ghost horse story that didn't make us sleep with the lights on or cry for hours. The books below cover a range of reading levels. These were some of our favorite books, with horses, mysteries and a little haunting.
Horse ghost books are great for horse-crazy kids any time of the year, but Halloween is a great time for these spooky stories. A holiday-themed book can also be a fun way to get a younger child interested in reading.

My daughter loved every Animal Ark book she read. This ghost horse story was one of our favorites from the Animal Ark Hauntings series.
Mandy and James are looking forward to visiting Folan's Racing Stables, but they arrive to find rumors of a haunting. Some of the jockeys believe the ghost of a stallion named Tibor is still there. Mandy wants to find out what happened and whether she can help him.
Colt in the Cave
This was my daughter's favorite. She reread this book a few times a year and was of the opinion that horse ghosts were not just for Halloween.
During a school trip to an old mine, Mandy thinks about the ponies that once worked underground. Then she sees eyes watching her from the darkness, although James can't see anything. A dream about a troubled pony gives her another reason to wonder whether a horse needs her help.
Foal in the Fog
Foal in the Fog: Animal Ark Hauntings, Book 5

This was another ghost horse book we enjoyed from Animal Ark Hauntings.
While out riding, Mandy sees a foal that disappears into the mist. Later, she meets a girl whose foal, Curiosity, died in the fog. Mandy begins to wonder whether Curiosity was the mysterious foal she saw, and why the foal would have returned.

We bought this book for Halloween one year. We hadn't tried the other books in the collection, but we enjoyed this one on its own. My daughter would read anything if it was about horses and ponies.

My daughter received this book for Halloween in 2009 and read the entire book that same day. We had just moved to the Colorado Rocky Mountains, and she was so excited that the story took place near our own backyard.
A summer visit to Mustang Mountain Ranch takes a turn when stories about a phantom horse named Diablo lead to a missing friend. Becky, Meg and Alison join the search, with the supposed curse of the ghost horse adding to the mystery.
